Hello all! I'm new to the chicken business. Keep them more for fun (and emergency) but enjoy the eggs without the butchering...so far. Have a small flock of about a dozen. Mostly hens. One Phoenix rooster that's mean and dirty. Only attacks when I have my back to him. Hens include a couple black and one brown buff brahma bantams, one phoenix and a few Easter Eggers (I think).

Built my own coop last year. Its a copy of the this one from William Sonoma:

I've had my problems with the family dog...a basset...whose killed 6-8 of my birds, but I think I have remedied that problem. Now I just have to keep the coyotes away. My miniature donkeys can handle them though.

Well, 'Hello' again to everyone. I'm sure I'll be seeking lots of advice. Happy to be here!

Welcome!

Welcome to BYC! I had the same problem with my dog too, IMHO the best way to prevent that is to keep the dog and the chickens completely separate. Good luck to you.
