Okay, so I just had a hen almost die from overheating. She's under quarantine right now because she's new, so she in the "greenhouse" (A big room made entirely of chicken wire where the keep seedlings during garden season to keep the dog from eating them) My question is, how do you keep chickens cool in tractors or runs? This room is basically a chicken run. I need to make sure this doesn't happen again.

A couple things come to mind: find a way to shade her temporary coop, such as hanging a sheet off a line or using a cheap sheet of OSB, and set up a fan with wet cloth over it, making a sort of air conditioner.

Do you have a friendly chicken who could be in there with her? They hate to be alone, and I think it's easier for them to become part again when they have company.

Good luck!

We live in Texas, also. -during the summer heat we place fans in front of the coops/runs and place a mister in the large oak above them. The fans blow/circulate the cool mist in the air. This, in conjunction with the shade of the tree and plenty of ice water, keeps my birds cool. -hope your chicken makes a full recovery!

Thank you both very much.

Yes, I actually am going to put a hen in with her when I put her back out. I think I'm going that have her stay the night in her kennel in the air conditioning, though. She's still droopy. That'll also give me time to fully get the "greenhouse" set up for her. Thanks for the suggestions.

Okay, great! I haven't really had to worry about it with my flock because they free range, totally in the back feild. They have access to all kinds of shade, dust bathing spots, etc. I'll get her all set up. :)

Me, too. She's is already a lot better. We will keep her in the comfy air conditioning until she's fully recovered.
