Competetive/ casual target shooting

This should be a good place to share tips, places to shoot, interesting targets, gun talk, etc. Archery too.

I've been a competitive rifle shooter (CMP and NRA highpower) for several years. Have also been an active trap and skeet shooter since I could wield a shotgun and have also dabbled in action pistol and am a competent archer. This in addition to casual target shooting in the backyard and gravel pits. I currently consult in precision rifle marksmanship for a couple of LE agencies (volunteer instructor) and teach marksmanship and safety to youth shooters.

Anybody else punch paper or steel for fun?

Love to target shoot. My husband even more than me. Just picked up a small long bow as an adult and am learning it. I love the silence of archery. No ear plugs and I can practice in our backyard as long as dogs and chickens stay clear. With the guns (with exception of shooting clays with shotgun) we typically pack into our ravine where safe to shoot into dirt backstop. Or go to the local gun range (very nice). I will follow this thread.

We like to shoot as well. Just target practice for fun. Our property is too small to shoot here but I belong to a local rod & gun club so we have a range to go to. I'm very anxious for better weather. My husband got me a glock 17 for Christmas and my son who is 12 received a rifle for Christmas. We went with a Savage .243 Axis which I think I am more anxious to try than he is! My glock came with some paperwork on their own competitive shooting club. They have one in PA not too far from me. I don't know that I'd be ready to enter but thought about checking it out this summer as an observer. Honestly I haven't even loaded it yet let alone practice with it. Our safe is small and holds the hand gun we already owned and ammo/ clips for everything else. I had ordered another safe with that uses the fingerprint scan but had to send it back as the keypad didn't work properly. Should be getting the replacement any day.
I've no real experience with bows though I got to try one at a boy scout event I took my son to a few years ago. The kids in his group finished the bow skill quickly and the instructors let the parents try. It was really fun, something I would love to do again.

DH and I are working on plans for building a shooting range on our property. We have a little bit of a hill that we will dig into and use the fill for building sides. I would like to plant some trees on the south side for shade and privacy, he is not so sure about that. I don't know what his objections are. I grew up shooting BB guns, then the 22. Started with the bow at 8, bought my compound bow while in college, but I need to replace it now. Didn't get into shooting shotgun until after we were married. DH took the NRA Trainer certification, so he occasionally does the training for friends for their concealed carry permits.

I would like to plant grass in the shooting lane, DH wants to go with gravel. Any opinions, what do you think would be better - prefer grass or gravel?
