although I've always wanted a flock of chickens, I never had to space or knowledge about them to start one, luckily my husband and I just bought our 1st home it is out on 4 acres and already had a old chicken coop on it. I just got my 1st set of baby chicks this march, they were red sex hens. And unfortunately something out side got two of them their 1st week out side they were inside until the 2ND week in May because we kept having the temp fluctuate and I was told that they wouldn't be able to handle it. I only bought 5 chicks to begin with and then my mother-in-law purchased some at the swap meet and I ended up with two of those which weren't much younger than the three I had left, I have no Idea what "kind of chickens she brought, but they were black with white polka dots all over and ranging in size by quiet a bit, one of them ended up being a rooster. The red sex hens seem to almost "be trained" they follow me around and squawk at me all the time as if they were talking to me but I had them since they were chicks, the others were pretty much grown when I got them although they keep a distance they are warming up to me finally. I have lots of questions and the only knowledge I have is what I've learnt in the past few months. I'm so excited to finally have the flock and want to do it right and provide everything they need, with out being suckered into buying all the things I or they don't need from the local stores. Do any of you have some pointers, or must knows for someone that has never done this before??
