I've seen some thread's that have compost barrels..... (dum question )what are they for?

They contain composting materials, usually to decompose and create rich soil for gardening.

They are to keep organic material out of landfills and use the decomposed product to your advantage saving money and resources. Compost piles on the ground that your chickens can get into can provide a great protein boost of worms and larvae.
