How concerned/worried should I be over ordering hatching eggs for a breed prone to mareks?

I’ve ordered crele legbar hatching eggs already, so that is happening, without my realizing that they can be prone to mareks. I also really want to order hedamoras and was planning to but am reading they are also prone??

Should I be concerned and not add these breeds to my flock?

How rampant is this disease?

Our flock does not free range and is completely fenced in, no exposure to any other birds in the sky. I don’t tend to let others into our chicken run very often. Sometimes the kids friends go in but rarely and none have chickens themselves. We aren’t perfect bio security wise but I think fairly low risk…

is there marek's in your area? where I live marek's is not a threat except on the big (caged) farms.

egyptian fayoumis don't get marek's at all.

Marek’s travel from bird to bird or from an infected bird touching the ground, then a non infected one coming in contact with that ground. Crele legbars (and legbars in general) are more genetically fragile birds and are more prone to normal illnesses. All chickens in a flock can get Marek’s if they came in contact with a carrier, just some die faster from it than others.

I do not have perfect bio-security either, but just be mindful where your shoes and clothing have been. I change my shoes when going into the run if I had walked near or in areas that migratory birds hang out. Just be mindful and maybe have a pair of “chicken coop” boots!

From what I have read, they do get Marek’s but they don’t show symptoms. So they just become carriers for life basically. I forgot when or where I saw and/or heard that however.

in my area marek's almost don't exist. we have mycoplasma and IB. as for fayoumis I have never heard the can get marek's. if you find link that says they do please share it.
