Hi all, I'm new to the forum and have some questions about the floor of our soon to be coop.

I would like to take part of our unused shed and make it into a coop.
Right now it has a concrete floor. Is this ok?
Do I need to seal it or paint it?
Do I need to build a wood floor on top?
Can I just put some vinyl floor over it?

Whats your take? What would you do?
Thanks:)

i have a concrete floor. love it. i use pine shavings over it.

mine is not sealed. (i personally would not do that. others may.)

others like using linoleum on theirs. i do not.

do not put wood over it, it will break down eventually, the concrete will last much longer.

you are blessed to have the concrete!

I was hoping it would be ok to just put the bedding on top.

Seems it will be easy enough to shovel out when needed and put with the compost.

Do y'all think deep liter method is also ok on concrete?
I have a lot of questions.

I have an slightly elevated coop with a wood sublfoor that I poured about 2 inches of concrete over. I just use pine shavings on that. I have had no problems and don't have to worry about predators coming through the floor also don't have to worry about the floor rotting through!

I have a 16x24 coop with concrete floor. It works out fine. Easy to clean, lasts forever. Put in slope for easier cleaning. I use wood chips that I make myself plus some hay/straw.

the easiest way to shovel concrete: snow shovel! it's flat and gets a lot out at a time!

deep litter is excellent on concrete. i do the same as with a horse stall. deep litter and bank the sides. that's what works for me, find what works for YOU.

lot's of questions are okay. none of us are paid employees, we like it here and it's a sharing community! we're all learning as we go. bring 'em on!

Concrete is *wonderful*. If it is very porous and rough you might ought to seal it (or lay vinyl), but otherwise there is really no reason not to just put the bedding down on the concrete as it currently is, and call it good.

If you live in a pretty cold-winter climate, either put vinyl or something on top of the concrete or (easier) just put lotsa extra bedding down in winter, as concrete can be quite cold on feeties.

You will find the concrete floor to be an (almost always useful) good heat sink that helps keep the coop warmer in the first part of winter. In some circumstances, especially if you don't use very much bedding, it can make the coop damp on those few days in late winter and early spring when you get a real warm day (because the slab floor will still be quite cold, cooling the coop, so you can get condensation and humidity), but this is manageable and not generally too much of a problem in a coop.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I too have concrete on my floors in a very large coop it is fantastic, you will never regret it. it makes cleaning easier and disinfects better which is allways good for you and your chickens. I just put some straw hay down after cleaning, it is so cool to just rake up the old and hose down and lay down new bedding. so yes my vote is go for it and do not put anything over it.
