We're modifying a storage shed the previous owner made, into a coop. It was built next to the house, so on the inside of the coop, the wall on the right is the stucco of our house; the back wall and the left wall are concrete cinder blocks. The roof is wooden and covered with shingles. We're going to modify the front wooden doors, to include wire mesh and ventilation.

My question is flooring; the floor right now is concrete. I've read that I can put down construction grade sand and some Sweet PDZ and that's enough. I've also read that I should put down DE -- either under the sand or mixed in with it? -- to keep down bugs. I've also read that some people put down linoleum, then the sand.

Given that the floor is concrete, how best to layer it?

I have a concrete-floored coop, and I use shavings with a sprinkle of DE. I have never used sand but I'd imagine it would work.

I'm putting a new floor in an old coop and I'm trying to decide on flooring. If I use concrete should I seal it? Paint it? I have leftover paint from my basement floor -- would that be okay? Or is it better to leave it as is?

My coop has a concrete floor with a concrete foundation. Love it! No predators can dig into it, a big plus. I use shavings over permethrin dust, deep bedding, works well. The floor that's old broken concrete has stall mats under the bedding. Manages the dampness better and is easier to shovel out. Mary

I put straw or pine shavings on my concrete coop floor, thin pine shavings in the summer, deep straw bedding in the cold winter. It's easy cleanup if you own a flat shovel too!
