My husband and I are soon to buy a house with land and are excited to add chickens to our lives. In researching various breeds/mutts of chickens, I've heard a lot about how great Golden Comets are. I understand that they are sex-linked (able to determine the sex at birth) and is a product of a New Hampshire rooster and White Rock hen. But I'm having a hard time finding that particular parent mix. My confusion is, reading that the Golden Comet is the same as (enter several different sex-link names, Golden Buff, Red Start etc.), and I get that they are all sex-linked, but the parents of those come from a different hen and rooster than what I'm told comes from a Golden Comet. I'm so confused about this. Even some hatcheries sell 'Golden Comets' which come from a Cherry Egger Roo and Rhode Island White hen. So can you explain how they can have different parents but be the same name? And how do I find the true Golden Comets that everyone is raving about? Thanks!

:frow Hi and welcome! It’s so nice to have you here! A friend of mine has golden comets. This bunch is extremely friendly and very productive. They are brown with white tail feathers and some flecks of white throughout. Darling as chicks but as adults meh...
Any of the sex linked breeds designed for high production would probably suit your needs if you want tons of eggs. Read up on the characteristics that are important to you. I’ve heard they burn out after the second season but my friend’s flock is still doing well and they are 3 years old now. Out of the eight chicks she still has 6. One of those had a reproductive problem and the other was taken by a predator after being accidentally left out of the coop (she thinks) at lockup.
Whatever you choose, build them a secure coop and the biggest secure run you can possibly build and you and your chickens will enjoy life!
