A few days ago, I put down and incinerated 2 lavender buff orpingtons because one of them was displaying the classic symptoms of Coryza. I just read about SMZ-Med 454, and this is part of the description:

"For control of outbreaks of disease, medication should be initiated as soon as the diagnosis is determined. Medicated chickens and turkeys must actually consume enough medicated water which provides the recommended dosages.
SMZ-Med 454 works fast. If symptoms persist after using this preparation for 2 or 3 days, consult a veterinarian."
It's my understanding that there is no "cure" for Coryza, and after a chicken recovered from the disease, it is a carrier for life. If it's going to be contagious for the rest of it's life, and poses a threat to healthy birds, why bother treating it? Perhaps I'm mistaken and SMZ-Med 454 "cures" Infectious Coryza? I want to know if I did the right thing by disposing of this lovely pair of hens...

There is no cure for coryza. An antibiotic or sulfa drug may treat symptoms, but the disease generally returns when the medication is stopped. You did the right thing to protect your other chickens, and any future chickens. There will be people that may tell you they have had it in their flock, and cured it, but most breeders will kill any chicken they suspect of having it because they can't afford to infect other birds. So sorry about your birds, but here are some articles from respected sources concerning coryza:

I'd read many of those articles, but wasn't sure if I'd missed out on a new cure. When I discovered the disease, I did what (I thought) needed to be done. After reading about treatment, I began to wonder if I'd needlessly killed these birds and feelings of doubt, and then guilt, started setting in. Thank you for confirming that I did the right thing. I can rest easy now...
