I have a 6 month-old leghorn x cochin pullet that has gone broodie, or at least is behaving like other broodies I have had; sitting in the same nest all day, stopped laying and acting protective of the nest. However, she refuses to sit on any eggs...I hae dumped er from her nest, placed some eggs I wanted to hatch and left the area. When I went back to check she had gone back faithfully to "her" nest. The next morning however she had moved to an empty nest. Moved eggs back under her, went back to check 30 minutes later and she has moved back to an empty nest again.

I would love to hatch more chicks this fall to be ready for Spring laying, but I am thinking I might have to devise a way to break her from brooding :/

Hi,

There are a number of methods of breaking broodiness but the most popular seems to be to place the hen in a small coop, suspended off the ground (with food and water) for a few days (type "breaking broodiness" in the search bar). Personally, i move my broody hens to an outside coop for a few days and it seems to do the trick.

Good luck
