I purchased 12 red golden phesant eggs on ebay. They started to hatch today. Only one so far has hatched, but others are pipped! Heres the problem..... The one chick that hatched is coal black, feet and all! I've seen pics of golden chicks and they didn't look like this! I've hatched melanistic black ringneck pheasants before but they usually had a patch of white on the throat area. This chick is completely black! I guess what I'm trying to say is is this what a golden looks like when they first hatch or did I get taken across by the guy I bought the eggs from?

[ Here are two pics of this mystery pheasant chick. img

I'm obviously having trouble posting pics here. Will try again later

Thanks riffecreek! The eggs are different shades of tan. I used to raise ringnecks and they look like pheasant eggs.

Tough call on a chick that young. It doesn't quite look like any of the melanistic ringnecks I've ever hatched. Mine were always dark brown or coal black with a white throat patch. This one looks rather grey. You might have to wait this one out until it gets older to make a positive ID. Could be the ebay seller put in some extra eggs from a different breed (I've had that happen. They think the're doing you a favor and then you end up raising something you don't want), or it could be that rare mutation everyone hopes for.

Keep us posted!
