I have a two year old Silkie hen that is thoroughly confusing me. She will spend all day in her nest box sitting on a clutch of communal bantam eggs, leaving occasionally to eat or drink or come retrieve snacks with the rest of the flock then usually return back to the nest. However if I approach her while she is sitting on the eggs she will screech and abandon the eggs. She does this every time, no matter if I wait one day before approaching or five days. She never puffs up at me or tries to peck me. If given an egg while sitting she will not pull it under her. I don’t understand, is she just taking all day to lay her own eggs and this staying in the nest box all day, or is she just a non commital broody? :idunno

Sounds like she is just new at being a broody hen, some broody hens will leave the nest really easily or won't take extra eggs when they are being watched
Oh no, 😓 I was really hoping she was just loitering. I’ve tried multiple times to move her and her eggs out of the coop to a broody pen and every time she panics and abandons the nest completely in a favor of the flock. But leaving her in the coop, the other hens keep adding to the clutch. I’d love to let her hatch some eggs but at this rate she’ll have twenty eggs under her all at different stages of incubation and still she might just abandon them all. This is so stressful.

Can you put her in the broody pen for a few days maybe she will go back to the nest?

I can try, but the last time I tried she spent the whole day ramming into the walls of the broody pen and screeching at the top of her lungs. She knocked over her feeder and waterer and destroyed three out of five eggs running over them in her panic. I was honestly worried I was doing more harm to her than good...

Oh no, I'm sorry, perhaps just mark a few eggs and take away all the rest every day and see how it goes if she stays in the regular coop
