Hi. I am new- at the raising chickens that is to say. I live in SC- outside city limits. I have one hen and one rooster. I am looking for info and ideas & appreciate all of your taking time to enter the info I have seen so far.
I am glad to learn about tethering ( even if I did, it would only be for a few hours-) I am working on a new coop (small) & was curious if it would be ok if I allowed them to wander the yard -while I am out with them only. I read the immediate no's then read the yes's & I see where all are coming from. thank you all for sharing. Keep it up- I am learning already!
Bless you all.
I will keep reading!

You can put an electric fence around their coop and even have them out when your not there. There are lots of them online. Do you know what you need inside of the coop and how much space the coop needs

truly-- I have a waterer, a feeder- bars-limbs- for them to climb up & sit/perch- but other than that, no idea- and not sure on space for each bird- i know more the better, but I have to be realistic.
thank you for your time by the way.
Your knowledge & time are appreciated.-

each chicken needs about 8 inches of roost space with is like a tree branch or you can even use a 2*4 but make sure the wider side is facing up or they won't be able to stay on it. Each chicken needs about 4 sq feet of space in the coop if you have a run which is an outside area fenced in completely including the top you need about 10sq feet per bird in the run. You need nesting boxes where they lay there eggs. There are many ideas on nesting boxes you can go to pinterest and find something really easy. How many chickens are you planning on having if you can tell me I will happily design a coop for you I love chickens and have researched soo much about them. I really enjoy designing coops and I can just send you a picture of the layout.

you are great. i have plans on 3 or 4 hens & 1 rooster at present. I have come by several wooden pallets that I was thinking I could maybe salvage wood from- not for sure though. I would like it easy to clean- to get into I mean- also some easy way to get to their eggs/roost spots-I am looking at very simple- not worried about aesthetics just now.
I want them to have shelter of course- and was hoping to find plans on coops that can be moved easily. i say simple then keep adding i know. but i have seen some really neat ideas. ok so did I give you anything to work with here? i do have some funds but wanted to stay low. about to send my son to college this fall and of course we are counting dollars! thank you so much for taking your time. May God bless you for your kindness & selflessness.
really refreshing.

I let mine out in the yard when I'm home, I leave them out when I go in the house. Our yard is fenced and I have not had a problem with the exception of when they were smaller one got into our neighborhs yard.
if I leave then I put them back in their run.
I don't see a problem to let them in your yard if it's fenced when your out with them.
If you leave yours in the yard when not with them would depend on predators and fencing. Can they get out, is it likely something will come along and eat them those are the things that need to be considered.
