My girls are on a flock raiser and free choice oyster shell. No complaints, no problems. So now i am sure your going well, it ain't broke so why change it? lol

Well, i also have ducks more of them than the chickens, so it always made sense to just use the FR, simplicity. Now i will be adding a half dozen more chickens, so we are getting up there and it would be more straightforward to transfer them to a layer so i can keep better tabs on the duck feed level. In the past there just weren't enough chickens to justify a 55lb bag, now soon there will be.

Is there a negative to switching them over? they are for laying yes, but we will keep them all beyond that... so there are no dinner plans for these birds, will layer burn them out? (sounds silly, but i hear these sorts of things, not sure the accuracy, hence my ?'s)

The FR is 18% protein. The layer i am considering is 17%, so close nothing to major in change there.

Thank you!!

No. In fact, many local mills sell their house Layer as their lowest priced feed. If you can get a good Layer at 17%, which sounds right, and save a few bucks a 100, why not?

Our local feed mills sell the feed they grind as the best buy. They also sell pre-bagged, trucked in feed, but no particular discount on those. High prices everywhere on those.
