i have been researching button quail all winter. I'm thinking about getting some hatching eggs in the spring. I keep reading contradicting information though. Some breeders say only keep in pairs, or trios, other breeders say can be housed in a colony if they are brought up together (don't introduce new birds once they are mature). Some say that they cannot handle temperature drops below 50, others say they are hardy and as long as they are protected from drafts can handle freezing temps. About the only thing people agree on is feeding!
Help!

Well, I am not an expert, but they have to be in pairs because they are monagamous, and they aren't hardy because they are from the sub tropics, and the perfect temperature is 45-85 (I got all this from "A CLOSER LOOK AT BUTTON QUAIL"), some one on here lost all theirs in 50 F, I believe.

we have had people who left their CBBQ out in overnight temps of 50* only to go out to ALL of them having died during the night. They come from a semi tropical area and are NOT suited to cold temps at all.
you can keep them in "colonies" but they are monogamous by nature AND territorial as well so it is VERY STRESSFUL to do this to them. They will fight( BOTH male AND female) to protect what they believe is theirs and can do some serious damage to one another.Occasionally they will fight to the death. You can keep all boys in together or all females in together fairly safely. but here again ,on occasion they will stress out and fight.
Check out Yahoo group BQ411..it is moderated by Jodi MacDonald who has been raising and researching CBBQ for around 30 years. Also, "Quaillady" (Alexandra ) is on BQ411 alot and is 0very knowledgable.
