I am designing my new coop based on the room available in my shed. I have been designing as I go, and have a general question regarding space and roost space.
The coop is about 30 inches wide and 6 feet long (for three birds). After 6 feet I step up three feet (to give myself storage outside/under the coop for the food/shavings/etc) where I will make the roost(s), basically two roosts over two feet at two heights with a poop board and light litter underneath the roost. NOW - I have heard that the roost needs to be twelve inches away from the walls - that leaves me no room. DO I NEED TO WIDEN?
Also, the nesting box (14x14x14), of which I am only providing one for the three hens, is 24 inches from the bare floor, perpendicular to the length of the coop, and inside the coop - I provided a roost to assist the ladies into the nesting box... Think this will work? I can always turn that around to provide more room to get into the nest.
here is a rough draft of my design thus far. Any pointers appreciated.
