Hey Ya'll....I'm a new chick Dad...I bought 8 chickies last week and have been learning alot on this forum...THANKS SO MUCH for all the info ya'll put out there.

It is time for me to leave the babies outside all day, but was having trouble with coming up with an idea to keep them safe and outta the sun. So, I searched in my garage and found a beach umbrella that we bought last year for Gulfshores Alabama. It was the perfect size for 8 chicks...I placed the hardware mesh in a circle and put the umbrella over it...connected the spines of the umbrella into the small squares of the mesh for extra support..it worked perfect. We bought the umbrella at Big Lots for about 5 bucks...so cheap..and you can still use it at the beach when the chickies are done with it.

Just thought I would pass this info on in case it might help someone else....here is a pic..

Great idea! We have our first 8 chicks as well...7&9-week-old Rhode Islands, Buff Orps, and Barred Rocks. You better get to work on a coop, LOL

They grow super fast!

Are they still sleeping inside at night? Ours moved to the coop full-time about a week ago. We have a fenced back yard, but I'm still nervous about free-ranging so I might try to do something temporary like that to give them a little yard to play in.

Good luck!

Hey NashChic

I bought 5 Rhode Island Reds 2 Golden Comets and we think 1 New Hampshire Red. They are only about 3 weeks old, so they do come in at night. Welive in Louisiana so it is warm enough during the day, but still too cool at night.

The coop plans are gettin finalized this week. In just the last week they have grown so much.

You have to find a worm for them when you put them outside, it is so funny to watch them.

That is a great idea and very easy to do. It's great to see everybody's ideas and making good use of things that might not be used much.
Thanks for posting.
