I will be adding on to my existing coop, as I am adding on to my existing flock. I told my husband I want to build it with his help and guidance. And tools. :gig

I'm still in the design phase, and I have a question for the BYC coop building brain trust.

What is the minimum angle you would need for a metal roof? Moderate amount of snow fall, but I can easily reach all parts of it to remove the snow with a broom. It's not going to be a large area; right now I'm thinking about 28 inches and 8 feet long. There will be support in both of those dimensions.

I don't have any drawings yet. Can anyone recommend a free drafting program I could download off the web?

I'm going to tag a few people whose expertise I admire. (I know there are many, many more people than these.)

I'd use a 3/12 pitch, minimum with purlins set every 2'.
I just draw things to scale with a metal ruler and pencil.
If you are adding on, can you post pictures of what you are adding on to?

It will be on the left side of this coop. The existing side wall is a 4x8 sheet. I have to come up 8" from the bottom to clear the tire, so I have 40" x 96" to work with. It will come out 24" to the side.

I'm used to working with angles, so if I figured correctly, 6" rise over 24" gives me a 14 degree angle. (Trig gave me 14.036 degrees.)

Am I figuring this the right way?

3 in 12 is the minimum recommended roof angle from every manufacturer of every Roofing Products you can imagine. Metal roof? 3 in 12. Gaf premium shingles? 3 in 12. Polycarbonate roofing? 3 in 12. Dobie lover has the right of it. Whomever mention 14 degrees above has the right of it. 6 in 24 is the same as 12 in 48 that's one in four which is the same as 3 in 12.

Will roof start at top of existing curve?
No. It will tucked under the bottom edge.

It's going to be a lean-to design. I plan to have the triangles on the ends open for ventilation (covered with HC), and am adding in every square inch I can for more.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure I'll have more questions as this project continues.
