Coop bedding

I'm new at this also, but I'm finding out a lot of the BYC members are liking pine shavings. Just purchased 4 bales, so I hope I'm right. Lol

Ya that was what i was using but switched as we use straw for the horses

Hi there i am wondering what is the best for bedding i aam using straw but want to no what is best

The best bedding the is driest, most absorbent, soft bedding you can find.
I feel that pine shavings (not flake) are more absorbent than straw. The shavings are fluffier (softer landings for the birds) than flake.
Hemp bedding is very low in dust and dry but it is expensive and tends to pack.
My personal preference is to use a blend of hemp and pine shavings but until I can source a local supply of hemp, pine shavings it is.

Do you mean for the nest boxes or for the floor under the roosts? I use pine shavings/flake for the nests and use sand under roosts.. I love the sand .. I just scoop the poop like a giant litter box ... the floor of the run is wood chips.. pine needles.. leaves and sticks... at different times..

I use sand also in my entire coop and I love it! Super easy to keep clean. In my nest boxes I use excelsior bedding which I get for free from the nursery. I think all their ceramic pots come padded in that excelsior bedding and they give it away for free.

I am using flock bedding (it's like chopped hay) and horse bedding (pine shaving I believe) but my coop is still in my family room.
