Hi, I am buiding a sweet 4' x 8' coop for my eight girls that are coming in May. Some of the highlights of my construction are vinyl flooring throughout to include the nesting boxes and stainless steel doors and a stainless one piece roof as well.

My question is what are the dimensions needed for the door the chickens will use to get in and out of the coop? They are going to be standerd heavy breeds, Australorps and White Rocks. I am also going to build a nice ramp for them to get down into their 125 sq. ft. 6' enclosed run.

Thanks for your help!

We're newbies and not experts by any means, but it looks like hubby made our door approximately 10" x 10". The girls are about 2 months old and fit through the door fine - the door even looks plenty large enough even if they grow a bit.

Hope this helps ... here's what our coop looks like.

Thats good to know, thank you. I plan on using a design like yours, with a door that moves up and down on tracks for maximum security.

We have racoons, skunks, fox, coyotes and even fisher cats have been spotted in my area so it has to be secure!

Here is the 12x12 door my hubby made for our coop. We, too, have lots of predators, so we made this door very heavy and the summer door with welded wire ( to slide in during the hot months) will be weighted , as well, to prevent coons from getting in the coop.
We even used a double layer of welded wire just to be 100% sure !!

My chicken coop door is 12 inches high and 9 inches wide. My buff orpington rooster and 65 lb Aussie have no problems getting in and out.

Wow, great! Thanks all, I would have never thought of raising the entrance off the floor but it makes sence.
