I got 20 chicks Friday šŸ‘ and need to design a low cost coop. I’m mainly interested in layers for our family of 8, but I might decide to keep 1-2 boxes of 5 hen/1 roo combos, but it’ll be couple of weeks until I know what I have. I know I want them stacked vertically; they will be outside; I need to control odor out of kindness to our neighbors šŸ˜‰. What size should I make the boxes and can I make them modular so additional boxes can be added as needed?

I made mine with a frame that holds two stacked cages ~6’ each. That way the cages can be pulled out for repair. A little over half the cage is 1/2ā€ hardware cloth floor with a dog crate pan underneath to catch droppings; the other section a treated wood floor with sand, fully enclosed, with a small opening between. The dropping pan and sand are easy to remove to dispose of the smelly stuff. Outdoors, you would need a lean to or something to keep rain from flooding the pans.
5’ x 2’ would be sufficient (if not exactly luxurious) for six quail. Hope that gives you some ideas.
