coop floor 2

I am in the process of building a better coop but im stumped about the floor right now i have chicken wire on the bottom so the droppings fall through and dont build up on the floor but i would like to put wood on the floor of my new coop im just worried that it will make the coop stink when they poop even if i clean every other day. Has anyone had this problem???

if you keep it dry it shouldn't stink.I section mine off so they can't wallow through their poo and add lime on top every so often to keep the smell away.Then after it builds up,it gets shoveled out in to the compost. Will

My coop's floor is wood and doesn't get stinky at all. I use the deep litter method and do put down DE regularly and add new shavings over the old until we clean the coop.
Just make sure that if you have waterers that leak or anything that you clean out under them regularly and do the same...put DE and clean shavings so there's no mold or wet staying there. If it's something you can't stop from a slow leak or they just spill it, use a pan or cookie sheet on the bottom underneath the shavings so it doesn't rot the wood.

I am going to build a new coop. I have one coop with wire under the roosts and one with floor under the roost. The next coop is going to have poop catching pans unser the roosts. The one with the wire under the roosts is definately easies to keep clean as they seem to poop the most when they're on the roosts.

thx guys you really helped alot i have been around chickens all my life but have never kept them as pets just took ones nobody wanted any more and re-homed them. I love this site you are all so helpful and sweet!!!

I converted my wire floor to a "solid" floor by putting down cloth, then wood chips. Even if they do something stupid like dump their water out, I know it will dry.

Do a search on this site for DE (diatomaceous earth). There are a TON of threads about it so you should be able to learn a lot. It can help you to control odors, plus it has other benefits for your chickens' health.

A wooden floor will be fine so long as you clean the bedding or at least stir it every day to help to poos dry up. Once chicken poo is dry it breaks down pretty fast and shouldn't smell as much.
The only downfall of a wooden floor is the crevices in the wood. Wood is porous and holds odors and moisture very well. I went to a local flooring store and asked for linoleum scrap or odd pieces. It was pretty cheap and it makes deep cleaning the coop a breeze because nothing can sink in.
For bedding in my coop I use pine shavings only.
