coop floor

I have some deck flooring left from a deck I tore down, can I use this in my coop for the floor or would the gaps allow stuff to go through and make a big mess.And would it be hard to keep clean ?

I think that I would be a bit more concerned about being able to clean the grunge that gets stuck in the cracks moreso than what falls through. You could lay down a sheet of linoleum flooring over it to help make it easier to clean and to keep stuff from falling through the cracks. Hopefully you can butt the deckboards close together and not have any really large gaps. What size will the floor be and what type of bedding material are you going to use on it?

the floor would be about 8 x 10would you glue the linoleum down ?

I wouldn't glue it down...that would make it harder to remove later on if you want to replace it. If you could turn all the edges up where it meets the walls (tack it to the walls, maybe) but yet have the edges at the doorways turned down you could use it to contain the litter, plus, using a garden hose you could wash it out letting the water drain out the doorway/turned-down edge. To really do this well you would probably want to build a slight slope into the floor.

Every one sees things in a different light. My floor is very similar to what you are proposing. I have a scrap piece of cushion floor covering my 4x8' floor.

I have mine only friction fit into place.
I like the fact I can take the piece out of my coop (where it is quite small in my case) and just hose it off and pop it back in.

Word of caution do not tamper with the cushion floor in cold weather it cracks easily but it s nothing a little duct tape can not fix.

I would think re-puposing the decking from an existing deck, you would not get much wood shrinkage, and could, with a pipe-bar clamp get a very tight fit between deck boards.

that being said, you will still have grooves to contend with, but you could probably come up with a solution under where they roost, as that would be where most of the waste collects.

Is it treated lumber? Some types of lumber (pressure treated, etc.) can be dangerous to animals depending on what it is treated with. Many of the chemicals have been changed to make them safer but this sounds as if it is older wood.

My floor is all like this because it's an old playhouse. I stapled vinyl flooring on it. I recommend having the floor whole thing up of the ground to keep critters from making a home underneath (which has nothing to do with the flooring type but I thought I'd mention it)
