Coop for Seramas

I am new to keeping chickens. I started my small flock of Rhode Island Reds, a Cuckoo Maran, and a Serama this year. I have so enjoyed them that I want to start showing and possibly down the road breeding them (only the Seramas).So I am looking to get a hen and rooster for showing to start. I would like to get a separate coop for them and while I have read alot online and have seen coops they are kept in, I am still wanting to get an opinion or advice on what kind of coop I should get and what size it should be. Is there anyone that can help me with this or point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance! I want to learn as much as I can so anything is greatly appreciated!

This is what I built for my Seramas and we got our first egg yesterday so they must like it.....I do let them free-range when we can, at least twice a week. They are small but I tried to give them as much room as I could but still have the tractor small enough that my wife can move it but keep it big enough to keep animals(or grandkids) from being able to lift or move it.... I have added a pvc feeder pipe to it since the pics which I love.

That is wonderful! Thank you for sharing! I like the size of the coop and the fact that they can still get down and walk around. What are the dimensions and how many do you keep in it? And congrats on getting your first egg! It's a beauty!

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. We keep 4 birds in it now with 3 hens and the rooster and it seems to work out well. I will get you some actual measurements but I think the coop part is 2x2x4 and the overall is 2x4x8. It has worked out really well and we have got 4 more eggs since that first one so they must like it too.....One of my big things when building one is I like it to look nice also as it is going in our yard and we have to look at it every day. Best of luck...

I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to get back to YOU! That is a good size. Not too big, not too small. I agree, if I have something I'm going to be looking at every day I want it to be nice to look at. You have done a very good job with this on your coop!

Oh thank you! I will check it out! Any suggestions or advice on breeding Seramas? I'm excited to start but want to make sure I'm doing everything right. I know I have alot to learn so any help is very appreciated!

Welcome! It's crazy protection! Im telling you One time I wasn't home for three days and they were fine this thing is CRAZY protected! ( yes, they have an automatic feed ) it's chicken wire on the run is so tiny you can't stick your pinky though it hardly! It has a good size run for about 4-5 seramas, perfect size coop with a ramp, two pearches inside, a slide out cleaning bedding pan, two nesting boxes ( there's a seperate door you can open to get to them also), two slide open air thingies ( lol don't know how to describe them! They slide open ( covered with chicken wire ) to let some air flow), and automatic push shut coop closing door! This thing is a bantam dream house! It's on sale RIGHT NOW for $399 free shipping! I got it in July when it was on sale

Sounds like it has been a great coop for you! The protection is definitely important as Seramas are so small and not as able to defend themselves. I have to say though, I'm impressed with how fast they run! The one I have now is a speedy little girl and I wish I had her energy!

Currently I have one Serama. She isn't show quality so I plan on buying a breeding pair and then going from there. This will happen after I figure out my coop situation. So right now I am in the research phase and trying to learn as much as I can before I get them. I know I will still be learning alot once I have them, but I thought getting a head start wouldn't be a bad idea.

Good luck to you and your hen! I say that this is the best bantam coop ever! In my opinion! We actually ( I kid you not...) sat by our coop at night waiting to see the culprit who kept tearing up the silkie cage and a 30 pound coon walked up and tried to tear through my serama cage and got nowhere! My seramas sat there looking at him without a care in the world!

We ended up shooting the coon though... He kept tearing into our duck pens and eating all the seed.
