Coop heating

You are 100% correct about needing ventilation and the negative effects of humidity. My coop has plenty of ventilation. It's attached to the garage with a a thick blanket as a door. I sealed the cracks that were producing drafts. I have Silkies, and tI find that hey do better when the coop temp hovers around 32 degrees. It's totally dry, I pick up the droppings daily. It is very clean. In 15 years my chickens have never had worms. I had poultry lice once many years ago.

This is just what I do. I love Silkies but they are more fragile, and when these pass, if I ever get more, I have thought that cold hardy breeds would be easier.

When I was a brand new chicken parent years ago I lived in Spokane, WA and we had a very bad winter with tons of snow. I was so worried and had the heat lamp in the coop. I was also researching fancy coop heaters. My mom came over and flipped out telling me she grew up in the midwest and 60 years ago coop heaters did not exist and there were no heat lamps on the farm... she was shocked that I would even consider such measures! 🤣 In my defense, this same woman raised me in Southern California where backyard chickens were banned. I must admit that even though I know the vast majority of chickens will not need supplemental heat... I do still worry about them being cold. I think it is just human nature.
