will this be okay? Both of our yards are small and slopping, the front yard is a little more even.

Also would it be okay to put our chicken coop, rabbit hutch (he needs a new one) and our sons play fort all together??

I have recently seen a few posts regarding chickens being stolen. That would be my main concern with the coop being in the front yard.

Do you plan to freerange your birds? If you do, the fort will have to be renamed "Fort Poop".

Wow, stolen? I was going to put mine in the front yard. Do you think a lock would deter a theif?

I was wondering the same thing about the kids play area being near the coop. I am worried about the noise of the kids scaring the chickens, and the poop.

OK... here is my soapbox. As my wise father told me many times before: Locks will keep out the HONEST people. If someone is dishonest, a lock only slows them down. If they want in to the coop they will find a way. I hate to sound pessimistic but it is true. I am not saying don't lock it. Far from it, actually! Place the most secure lock you can get, just don't expect it to be impenetrable or impervious to the serious chicken stealer! Ok, all done now! Good luck!

P.S. : As for the noise of the kids scaring the birds, don't worry too much. Some members here have chickens that perch on their shoulder while they run power tools!!

I have seen one coop in someone's front yard. It was cute to see the hens every day when we drove by and was a part of the process that got me into keeping chickens. I think as long as the coop is secure and you keep it clean so it doesn't bother your neighbors, you shouldn't have too many problems. I would be worried about kids walking by teasing them or neighborhood dogs harassing them. I think it depends, but it can be done.

Thanks for the comments and cautions.

Our front yard has large shubs in the front by the road, so you can't actually see in the yard from the road, you would have to come into the driveway and up the front steps. The back yard however is wide open and our dogs are back there.
