My daughter-in-law has one of those small coops that TSC sells that you assemble with a small run and a nest box that hangs off the back of the coop. She added hardware cloth all around and on the bottom to secure it and she tacked down the roofing with extra nails because she had read about critters ripping the roofing off.
Saturday night a huge coon (she saw it the next night when it came back and took a duck carcass) ripped the bottom of the nest box off and went in a killed everything. Apparently the bottom is made that you can remove it to clean the nest box area. He must have pushed it up, even with the weight of the ducks and chickens sitting on top of it.
I'm passing it along as a warning. I feel so bad for her. She did all she thought that was necessary to keep them safe. What a heartbreak.
