My Coop
My Coop
Hi there friends. Just wondering, have you experimented with different types of lightings in your coops? And did the lightings have any effect on the laying behavior or chicken’s health?

Im planning to have some lights in my coop and keep it on at night so I can check on the flock. But i dont want to disrupt the laying behavior.

Does the type matter? (LED, fluorescent, halogen, etc.)

Does color temperature matter? (Kelvin: cool/warm)

Does the intensity matter? (Lumens)

I'm far from an expert, but I don't think 'round the clock lighting would good for them.

I don't think it's good for any creature, imho.

Did I mention I'm not an expert?

Lighting in the coop is generally only needed in winter so your hens keep a normal egg laying cycle. If you do want to have it on to see your birds make sure they only have 12 hours of light. Unless the sun is up for longer than 12 hours then you can leave it on while the sun is up. I don’t think it matters what kind of light it is long as it doesn’t produce heat.
Hope this helps

I've been wondering the same. My flock consists of 6 rouen ducks and 6 rhode island red hens which are 13 weeks old. I have a string of lights inside my coop which is 80 lumens or about 5-10 watts of light. This is on 24 hours a day (they're outside all day) so I can see them better on my security camera (does have night vision). I've also got overhead solar lighting that I'll only turn on when I'm in the coop to clean, etc. I've been told the ducks and chickens need total darkness. They all seem to sleep perfectly well in the dim light though. Am I hurting them or causing future egg laying issues? Thank you.
