I'm moving my coop to the side of the barn for winter wind block, which also gives me power for a heated water bowl and lighting. I am considering just adding a flood light above the coop/run which would be on 24/7 to help deter the bad critters and provide light when feeding, etc. At this point I do not plan to add any extra light inside the coop, but the floodlight will light up the attached run.

Will there be any issues with the light on 24/7? Will chooks still go to bed early when it gets dark?

My first winter with my ladies and hoping to do good by them!

They might not want to go in to roost if the light is always on. Don't expect predators to be discouraged by a constantly on light either, all that does is make it easier for them to see. Even a security type, on when presence is detected, doesn't bother raccoons or opossum and probably wouldn't discourage a fox either. I haven't tried them but the "red eye shine" lights are supposed to work pretty well at discouraging predators.

I put a solar powered flood light on my coop run. It comes on anytime predators get near. We have had foxes at 3 am, Raccoons, and a bobcat was on our property. No chickens or turkey have been lost so far.

Mine have 24/7 light. I use a 13 watt red cfl in the run and a 4-5 watt red led bulb in the coop.
They sleep fine but sometimes stay awake for an hour of so after sundown.
The light isn't very bright though, barely enough to see.

And coons aren't bothered by the light, that's for sure.

This^^^....except those red light things don't work either.
Predators are smarter than that....smarter than the folks that buy that stuff haha!!

@Penny spender spend your pennies on a good headlight instead, for doing after dark chicken chores.
