I just wanted to say that I went with the vansickle barn paint that they sell at Atwood's and I am thoroughly not happy with it. I put 3 coats of it on in early August. A couple weeks later we had a whole bunch of rain and now it already looks like it was painted 20 years ago and needs to be repainted to offer any protection to the wood.

I used Lowe's dirt cheap "Barn Paint" on my barn, my coop, and a wooden shed. Its like $90 for a 5 gal bucket.

First coat applied as what I can only describe as a rather feminine shade of pink on my barn and coop, both made from hardieboard. Second coat went on a proper red. One (the barn) was sprayed on, the other was rolled on, with a trim brush to cut in. Results the same, both cases. Its holding up nicely to the FL sun and the humidity.

Three coats went on the shed, made with outdoor/exposure rated wood panels, 3/8" thick. Four coats in places. Mildew appearing everywhere except the S facing wall. Paint adhesion is good, but apparently offers no protection to the wood underneath. In addition to the mildew appearing on the surface, there is the usual warping associated with dry/wet cycles in wood as well. VERY displeased.

Yea, thats pretty much what I'm seeing with my barn. It looked just fine when I painted it but then after the two weeks of downpour that we got there isn't a single portion of the painted wood that doesn't look slightly water damaged and the paint is entirely covered with a blackish coat of mildew. There are a couple of pieces that I did not paint because the plan was to put some trim up and seal it with silicone, but the rain came before I had a chance to do that. And that wood looks 100% fine. It's almost like this paint specifically held extra amounts of water. I think next time I'm just going to take the extra time, and money, to pick out a good barn color exterior house paint.
