My chicken house is roof access and I was trying to figure out the best method of cleaning out the poop in the mornings without having to stoop and get my head in there - my first thought was a metal dustpan.

Then I remembered that I have this nifty pooper scooper set up for my dog and it makes scooping out the coop a dream. Almost no bending. I have the solid scraper thing, not the rake.

Our coop has a mesh floor (we gave up on the poop board because the poop wasn't going through the mesh to the board without spraying it down anyway and instead put a layer of straw down and then covered with bedding pellets (did you know that stall dry makes bedding pellets? They are only available in Canada apparently).

That is exactly what the stall dry ones are - we have a number of brands available, I was just surprised to see that Stall Dry has their own. Unfortunately, they don't come with stall dry deodorizer mixed in. They are more expensive than the other brand I get, but I can get them at the petshop where my son works, so if I run low I can get the pellets closer to home if I don't need to buy feed and such.

I am trying to get my son to convince the boss to carry all the chicken stuff I need so I don't have to drive for 45 minutes to stock up.

Wow! 45 minutes is a long trip! You must really love your chickies!

I sure do - even though we've only had them for just over a week. I live in the city and they are outlaws (for now). No feed stores near by.

If someone had the $$ and the inclination, they could probably make a decent little business out of a backyard chicken supply store once all the bylaws have been changed and chickens are 100% legal.

Okay, I just had to reply because your thread title mimicked my user ID title.....

Neato!

(I think I need to get out more.............................)

I use the stall dry pellets, but first mix some water in so it breaks down into the sawdust. Then I spread it on the floor, and every day use a kitty litter scooper to sift out the poop. It is probably more time consuming, but there aren't any flies in there this year and absolutely no odor whatsoever. The house is staying very clean, and just once a month I sweep out the leftover pellet dust and start over to make sure I get all the little poo particles.

Plus, the girls LOVE to dust bathe in the stuff if they are under cover from rain and their regular dust area is wet!
