Hi all this is my first post, eventhough ive been looking on here for a while soaking up everything i can in my new hobby of keeping chickens.
So I have a 5.25' X 7.25' Coop (These are inside dimensions from the edge of the beams meaning this is the smallest point) I am not sure if its really a 6 X 8 coop and this is what im measuring on the inside, but im erring on the safe side. and calling it 5.25 X 7.25
I also have a 15 X 8 run connected directly to the front door
I plan on eventually free ranging (only if im out side) , but im nervious with my dog since chickens are new, and my inground pool (eventhough its fenced in, they can probably squeeze through the aluminum fence) so im going to give them some time to acclimate before i start free ranging, and even when i do it will only be if were out there mainly on some nights and weekends while the weather is good.
Im located on long island, so its a colder winter. I have 4 nesting boxes that will be raised 14 inches off the ground not to take up any floor space, and also will be building an adequate roost with a drop box below it (also raised around 20-24 inches not to take up any floor space)
So basically, as with anything else i jumped the gun and dove in head first. I currently have 6 laying hens, and 5 started pullets on the way.. That leaves me with 11.. Am i going to be overcrowded.. With the 6 i have now they seem content
The final tally of breeds will be :
2X Easter egger
1X Black Maran
3X Red Stars
2X Rhode island red
2X Barred rock
1X Buff orpington
Am i overdoing it with 11 hens? OR should i be ok?
