would it be alright to put saw dust in my chicken pens instead of wood chips?

I have read on here that saw dust is to fine and can cause breathing problems. Most I think chose not to use it.

I've also read they will confuse it with their food and eat it which will make them sick.

sawdust also tends to form a sort of papier-mache/concrete type substance once it gets damp and pooey.
