I am going to get three standard-sized chicks. I have a whole coop/run planned in my head - but before I build it I need to check with you guys!
Does this sound good:
4 by 3 ft. hen house- 4 square feet per bird.
4 by 4.5 ft. run- 6 square feet per bird.

Also, how much space should each chicken have on a perch? And how big should nest-boxes be? I read that they should be as big as a shoebox, but isn't that kinda small for a big ol' hen??

Sorry for all the questions. Can't wait to start building!

Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing your homework, and get an A+ . For the roost, they will need between 10 and 12 inches each. and the nest boxes should be about a foot square. Remember, she only needs to be in there to lay, not get too comfey, and want to sleep in there! Good luck with your build, and make sure you get lots of pics!

The dimensions in my "how to build a chicken coop" pamphelet for nest boxes for standard hens are 12x12x 14high, and heavy hens 14x14x 14high. Of course, one part of the nest box needs to be taller if you tilt the roof to prevent the hens from sleeping/pooping up there.
