So I am new to chickens, had a coop done last year and it cost me a thousand dollars, yep I was taken for a ride I'm sure, a 500 dollar dog kennel for a pen, and I was on my way to having chickens. We purchased 6 chickens and of course one was a rooster so he went to a good home, my coop was the right size for 5 girls, but what if I wanted to add girls? I was and am a firm believer of 4 square feet per bird, my coop was just the right size for 5 to 6 girls and no more.
Well my girl went broody, 3 times in the year and at the last, was broody for weeks and I could not break it. She wanted to be a mama. So we set out to make the coop bigger, and the pen bigger and we set her on 5 eggs . The coop was to small for mama and the chicks, and the nest boxes were way to high, so we put her in a hutch on the front porch, she had 2 chicks and the coop build began in earnest. Once again I hired someone to build on my coop and run, bigger and better . The 10x10 pen went down, and the coop got bigger. The coop is twice as big now, the pen is twice as big. I'm going to be planting plants around my coop and pen, and I'm going to add sand to the run. I'm also having the front and sides painted with chickens and a welcome sign on the door. Here it is so far, notice the trampled grass from going to and from the pen all winter, grass planting is on the way soon to. now we have an electric door opener to! We are truly blessed but it took a lot of money ! TaLK about an expensive hobby lol

It looks awesome! Our first and only coop cost us over 1,000 when we were done. I still need to install a fan and swap the welded wire for hardware cloth or I just might have hubby add the hardware cloth on top or underneath the welded wire. I'd like to keep the coop door open at night. Luckily we built it big off the bat to house 12 standard. They use both coop and run all year. We are able to cover the run and heat the coop. This kept the ground from freezing in the run in the subzero temps.

I added 3 more this year. I'd like to cull or rehome at least one, that lays only soft shell eggs. I have another hen that lays shell particles inside the white. I don't know if we will keep her or not either. I'm pretty sure I have a boy in the new group of 3. We are keeping that chick regardless since its my youngest daughters chick. In the future, we might breed and keep the chicks.

Im into this coop and pen so far 3500 dollars , way to much! the first time it was 1500 for the coop and dog run, now its $2,000 for this rebuild. i saved like mad, and even got the electric door opener and lights and heat, but man the cost is hurting me . no more work on this coop!

I think there was a post a while back about being honest on what what spent to build "your" coop. We thought around 500.00 would build a coop.... ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ours is 8x10 and I spent 890.00, my daughter contributed (her idea to begin with and promised to pay for it, until her horse became lame and that was a HUGE vet bill) about 400.00, so over all about 1400.00. Still cheaper and much better built than a pre fabricated shed, but darn these are some expensive eggs!!!! LOL!

The coop was suposed to be a 6x8 he made it a 5x6" then he screwed up and cut the foam board all up in pieces so it cost me another 75 dollars for insulation, then he screwed p on the coop egg door, then said if I was not happy find someone else. Yep I paid him beforhand :( then trying to get the pen built was out of the question so I had to buy a pen froma fencing company, total cost 550.oo I had to have a guy come and do the rest of the coop! But he was so nice he only charged me 50.00 and we were blessed by him. Next the pen in the heavy snow was impossible to deal with, we had to get one of those tops for it. And we wrapped it up in tarps, my girlS were toasty dry all winter, and winters here are brutal! ( we are still getting snow! But did we want to end with only five girls? Nope we wanted to continue getting eggs for years to come so we decided to increase the coop, and the chickens, next year 3 go to freezer camp. And the two buffs will be brooded, we are in the process of getting 4 more pullets this weekend. We want to have at least 10 on hand to continue the eggs coming. We also got a light fixture in the hen house to insure we can !
We are planting flats with grass now, we want to make sure they get a bucket of grass every day so we are lining the back with 10 flats and grass seed. When the grass gets high enough in goes a flat of grass, when there done munching out it goes and we start the process all over. this and all the veggie scraps will do nicely.

Today the coop got new plug ins lighting and the windows were framed off, the pen got its new roof and every hole a sparrow could fit thru plugged. We are done fixing it and the pen! Now onto painting the trim and enjoying!

That is such a cool coop!  I really am quite jealous.  Winter is going to be such a breeze for you and your ladies!!
thank you we are thrilled, no more getting up and going through the snow to open the coop, no more worrying about water and it being frozen, no more getting the snow off the tarps I feel like a queen!
Today I came across some amazing finds. A giant cement rooster ! I'm painting it as its faded, some wall scones, and hanging baskets, a Tim water can, all to set in front of my coop and decorate. I'm hoping my grass recoups from the chickens so my yard looks like it did before chickens lol, my grass is trampled and brown in spots. I took two hints to my moms today, they were naughty and picked on my mama chicken, and I wanted peace in my coop and pen for the next girls coming, my mom is in chicken heaven. She wanted chickens for so long but really is to old to care for them so I got her a coop with attacked pen, and will care for it . She can just enjoy the antics. We had them out on the lawn, she is in love lol. And can you believe they laid eggs with in the hour they were there? Talk about feeling right at home lol.
