Yep, about a month ago I broke my wrist while moving my chicken tractor. I had attached the tow rope to eye bolts, which I sank into the ends of the skids. When I was moving it one night, one of the eye bolts popped out, I spun clockwise and landed ON my right wrist.

Lesson #1: While dragging a chicken tractor, keep one leg out behind you to act as a prop just in case! Don't just plant both your feet and lean back really far. Sigh.

Lesson #2: Later I learned that you never want to sink anything into the cut end of lumber. The way it was described to me was, "The wood grain in a piece of lumber is like a box of spaghetti." Imagine sinking a bolt into the end of a box of spaghetti.

Lesson #3: Buy two wrist braces. That way you can wash one while you wear the other. "My, what an interesting smell you've discovered."

It's been a long month, but it's healed to the point where I can once again type and use the mouse with my right (dominant) hand while wearing an Ace bandage. FINALLY. Although I probably won't be able to knit for another month or so. Very sad about that.

I've learned so many things - how to crack an egg with my left hand, how to tape together the legs of a can opener so that I can open a can, that Windows Vista includes speech-to-text software that will take dictation for you (important, since I'm a professional writer), that "It's a chicken-related injury" is a great conversation starter... most of all, I've learned about all those little things we all take for granted every day.

I keep telling my chickens, "Those eggs had better be ****ing delicious!" They should be laying in about a month. Fingers crossed!

my mom fell a couple years ago and broke both her wrists really good. It will be a little weak when you can take the brace off for good but I would think knitting would be good physical therapy. hang in there;)

golly. thats a dilly - sorry about your woes. good lessons all around.

how many times did you have to explain to the hospital staff what a chicken tractor was??

;-)

my best gal friend burst into fits and giggles every time i say 'chicken tractor' - all she can picture in her mind is one of the hens driving a very small john deere.

The top of the door to my run is too short and about every other time i go in there which is often, i bang my head on the darn thing. I could change it but it is a temp. setup. Good thing it's my head so i'm not getting seriously hurt.

Having lived with tendinitis and CTS since I was 16, let me second this one. I don't care how dirty your coop is, you ain't smelled NOTHIN' 'til you've smelled a brace that's been used without washing for 6 months :p

I'm kind of glad I was halfway through building the 3rd chicken tractor when it happened. It took 5x longer to finish this way, but it gave me something to do in the evenings. You know what's really boring? Watching TV without knitting!

I guess it's good for me in the big picture sense. Now that the tractor's finished, I've been working on a lot of major decluttering/home improvement projects. Maybe every 3 years I should take a few months off knitting just to catch up on stuff around the house? (Nah!)

I always call it a "chicken pen" when I'm talking to civilians! My friend Jason made my favorite smartypants remark so far, "Chicken tractor? Wouldn't oxen work better?"
