Coop Update

Hi, I came on here asking for info about the foundation of my future coop and have read this forum so many times for ideas. I wanted to send an update on where we are now. It's become a family affair. My husband who builds hospitals but refused to build my coop has even gotten into it!

We ended up pouring a stem wall and the run is sand. We have just finished the free range fencing and hot wire. The temporary electric fence was just taken down a few days ago. We added an auto roost door that is working amazingly well. Our wireless cameras are up and going even working with our house wifi from pretty far away.

We are still waiting on landscape and pavers that should start this week. The pavers will start at our existing walkways, go though the gate and go around the coop....and I'm assuming my critters will be doing damage to the landscape but we'll see.....

We have a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank for the two geese and two ducks. It has a drain at the bottom. I'm still working on how to landscape/rockscape the pond so that there will be less dirt drug into the water....

How fast the landscape gets destroyed depends on how many chickens you. They will create a dust bath, probably where it is easiest, near the coop.

The pond would look pretty with water Lillies. You can put them in containers and add a few little fish to eat the mosquito larvae. If the pond is their source for water it needs to be up to the rim. Or, you could just add an additional water source that you change daily.

It is a lovely build.

The pond isn’t their only source of water but it does need topping off. The ducks and geese haven’t started using it yet but it took about a week before they got into the baby pool I had. Lilies are a great idea, thank you!

Ducks and maybe geese will eat the lillies.
Do they sleep in that coop at night?
Do you have chickens too?

My ducks did not eat the Lillies. They seemed to prefer seaweed, but yea, have something the ducks can eat. The big leaves of the Lillies shade out algae and keep the water cooler.
