so I have been building my own coop and of coarse all my cuts have not been perfectly straight leaving some small gaps here and there.... do I need to stress about these? I want my chickens to be cozy, and have good ventilation at the top of the coop. If I do need to worry, what I was thinking was to use the leftover roofing felt paper stuff to cover the walls on the inside... my hubby thinks they will peck at it, but I figured I would ask here

I wouldn't recommend covering the inside walls with anything, as the chickens do tend to peck at EVERYTHING they can get their beaks on. Are you planning to put any kind of siding on the outside of the coop? If so, that should take care of the problem.

ok... I hate it when he is right....

we were not planning on siding... just paint.

You could put trim at the cornors and around window and door frames, but don't caulk anthing on the inside where the chicks can get at it, they will eat it.

We caulked EVERYTHING - inside and out to prevent drafts but I also slathered 3 coats of paint over it. Non Toxic Barn and Fence paint from Lowes.

They'll be fine! Don't stress! As long as they have a secure place where nothing can get in and they can be draft free in the winter so they stay warm, they will be just fine.

Ventilation is a big thing, so maybe you've overcome that issue already

What your winters are like is going to be the deciding factor. Opinion here on BYC is that chickens are good with around 80 degrees (above that then shade and cool water) and down to 20 degrees before needing heat. (and no breeze).

I saw a post here today about adding frozen plastic (pop) bottles to your waterer NOW THAT'S AND IDEA WE CAN ALL USE

dbounds10 Could you post a pic of that? I saw that paint in the store but it didnt look red enough for the barn color. Sorry this is off topic.
