Coopers Hawk

Just chased one off. Something sent 5 of my girls under the shed and the one near me just crouched, trying to make herself as small as possible. My poor cockerel didn't know which way he should go, so he squawked and went into the coop and the one near me ran in after him. Now they are all under the shed. hopefully they will settle down and come back out. I got my rifle nearby if it comes back into the trees.

Just so that you know, Coopers hawks are federally protected raptors. You might want to keep your birds in a covered pen for a few days until it moves on to better hunting areas.

Actually, I beleive they have been removed from the protected birds list

They may have been removed from the endangered species list, but they are still federally protected as are all raptors.

Yeah, Wikipedia has misinformation. I looked and still on list. Good thing I have a dog and cats that hunt birds. They can't be fined for killing one.
