So let me just preface this by saying I know just about nothing about meat birds, but last spring I accidentally ended up with one when I sent a friend to pick me up a buff orpington chick and he brought me back a cornish cross. As soon as this became obvious, I decided I would butcher her when the time came, but I kept putting it off and eventually I got really attached to my huge, white bird. She even has a name. Medusa.
So the other day I mentioned to someone who raises meat birds that I had a cornish cross as a layer hen and they asked how old she was. She's over a year old now. Apparently they don't usually live that long and some of his haven't even made it long enough for him to kill them. How long do you think she has left? I haven't noticed anything wrong with her except that one of her toes is a little messed up and I think it might be broken, but I read that if you leave it be it heals and it seems to be fine. If her health did decline and she was suffering, I wouldn't have a problem with putting her out of her misery. I'd just like to know how long she has left.
