Hello everyone

We live in Corona CA and last tuesday we woke to find a chicken eating the cast offs from our bird feeder. We think it's a hen (my husband's been comparing pictures on the internet and he thinks it's a Rhode Island Red.) We have a couple of questions and a request for help!

How long do we wait before we can reasonably decide the chicken has been abandoned/forgotten and we can find her a new home? (We drove around our neighborhood yesterday and only saw one home that had chickens. He checked on his flock and he's not missing one.)

In the meantime, what do we feed her? I've been giving her bird seed and water.

How do we go about finding her a permanent home? I would LOVE to keep her, but we don't have the space/neighborhood for that. Plus I think our landlord would be less than pleased. I thought about calling animal control, but I don't want her killed. She's not aggressive at all--I think I'm more wary of her than she is of me!

Thank you for your help!

How long has she been there?

Chickens don't typically travel far from home so she either lives close to you or someone dumped her off.
For short term bird seed, rolled oats (plain oatmeal), fruits and veggies are fine. she would probably even enjoy scrambled eggs. Long term you would want to get actual chicken feed.

Might want to ask a few more neighbors if they know of anyone in the neighborhood that owns chickens.

Hmmm, you could send a pm to debiraymond on here- she's nearby. Could be she'd have room for another, or what about the guy who's not missing any? Does he want an extra? I ended up getting a bird from craigslist that way- it just showed up in somebody's yard one day, and she didn't have chickens.

Sounds like you're doing all the right things- keep feeding her oats and seed and a scrambled egg here and there and you will have a friend for life!

If your going to be housing this hen until you find it a home, stop by the feed store in your area and get a bag of layer crumbles or pellet. Chickens don't really do well as a steady diet of wild bird seed. They can eat scraps from the kitchen too ... rice, lettuce, veggies, etc.. they are the true garbage eater

Maybe you'll want to keep her to keep the yard bugs down and make good compost for the garden. There is always the local humane society. They should have connections to folks that take in chickens.

Welcome to BYC, glad you decided to join us. Ask the landlord directly if they would mind you having a single chicken as a pet. They are so enjoyable I cannot imagine not having any and one would be super easy to maintain.

from Pennsylvania!

Bless you for taking care of that little soul! It's a shame you can't keep her, they really aren't much trouble at all, and imagine eating fresh eggs! I agree with the above advice, maybe get a little chicken food (layer pellets or crumbles) into her. Chickens do love greens, so if you have any extra veggies or fruit, or even grass she'd love it!

Good luck!
