A few months ago I acquired some quail from a co worker of my son, I think it was 14-15, the guy said most are hens with just 4-5 males, it was the opposite, with just 5 hens the rest were males, there was a white one that was crippled, he said that she still lays eggs, I was feeding on day and it crowed, so it was a rooster.
I had been hatching eggs from this group, and I ended up with some crosses, I have one solid white with a black dot on its head and the rest area brown with white breast and some white feathers over the body, the crippled bird was breeding, they are very pretty, I call them my hybrids.
If it works like sex link chickens, shouldn’t the solid white one be a male?
They aren’t quite old enough to vent sex yet.
Maybe a quail expert can tell me the answer.

You're not going to get sex linked from a cross of pharaoh and dotted white. The one with the black dot on its head is a dotted white, which is a common colour variant. With a cross of pharaoh and white you are usually going to get pieds (tuxedo, white wing, white splotches) with the occasional pharaoh or white.

Unfortunately, most pieds are not feather sexable, and the whites are also not feather sexable. If you have any pharaohs, we can help you sex them if you post clear pictures of their heads and breasts.

I found out today that the solid white with the black dot is a male, it crowed, and is trying to mount the tuxedo ones, I do have one with a white feather it’s a hen.
