Cost of raising a chick from hatch to lay???

Has there been any research done on how much it costs to raise a single bird from hatch to lay? I can buy ready to lay hens for $7. Was wondering if I could raise them for less. I know it's a lot of fun to watch them grow, but money is talking louder now than fun. Thanks Guys!!

I think it costs alot more to raise them from chicks until they lay then buying a laying hen for $7 but then again it depends on how many you want.

Ready to lay hens for $7 is a deal! I don't think you could raise them that cheap! But, you will miss the little chick stage (which is priceless!)
