I've got 4 quail hens in two cages in the same room - 2 in one cage and 2 in the other. One cage is on top of the other. They are all confirmed female, and since I sold the males that were in with then (1 was in each cage), 2 of the females have taken up their own version of crowing. It is not the actual crowing sound that the roosters make - it's that sort of whistle/trilling hen sound, but they do it very loud at the crack of dawn every morning. It is the 2 in the upper cage that are loud - the 2 in the lower cage are rather quiet.
We keep the quail in our spare room, and the lound "crowing" in the morning is getting pretty annoying. I'm thinking of selling off the noisy pair. The reason they are separated into two cages is that I can't get them all to get along with each other - this is another reason I'm considering selling them, as I did not intend to have to maintain two cages for just 4 birds!
My question is: If I sell off the 2 noise makers, how likely is it that one or both of the quiet pair will just turn up the volume in the morning to fill the void? Is there always going to be a loud one in the group to crow at the crack of dawn, or are some birds just quieter than others? Does it vary by variety at all? The noisy pair are a pharoah and a Tibetan. The quiet pair are a golden Italian and a golden - Tibetan cross.
