Hi,

My neighbor kid texted me the other day, because for some reason they won't call with the same device they use to text. He was excited about raising quail. I thought it would be fun to free range them, but I'm not sure this will work.

I'm pretty excited about it now also. I have a play structure in my yard that can be converted into a coop. I'll post a picture here for ideas. We are looking at getting some quail around the end of December. I have no idea where to start, so any help will be appreciated.

I'm thinking about running another roof structure along the top of the swings. This somehow building it all in. The second story may be too tall to get the quail to walk up. I'm also thinking of putting a floor in the bottom room so I can clean it out.

Free ranging quail is illegal in most areas without a permit since it is considered release. Caged raised quail lack many instincts that wild ones require to survive. You should also consider this is only a partial list of predators that cage raised quail don't have the instincts to flee; Weasels, cats, dogs, skunks, raccoons, foxes, bobcats, snakes, black crows, ravens, every type of hawk, falcon, and eagle, as well as anything else you can think with sharp teeth.

Read the stickies threads as well as the threads that will show up in my signature on this post. There is a whole section here on BYC for coop building you can find it under the forum tab.

Quail are ground birds and will only go vertical in times of fear (bobwhites will use perches some and that is about the only exception). They won't use ramps unless you force them to by placing their feed at the top which some members here have done with success. I don't really see it as being fair.
