So i got 1 silkie and 2 16 week old red laying pullets last night. Both from the same breeder I have gotten 90% of my other birds from. Its about an hour 1/2 drive from my house and the birds were transported in a pet crate in the back of the truck strapped to the lea of the cab where the wind would get to them the least. It was raining, but really humid and warm, and despite the wetness the birds did not get wet.

The silkie and the other red is not sick. None of the other birds at the breeders house are sick, just this one who started this up last night. I called and asked if any of his were sick and he said no, but offered to take back the sick bird. I dont know what the pullet has and I dont want to take a bird back to the breeder if it might make theirs sick. He lets them free range over most of her yard.

I have the the new birds in a brooder away from my other girls.

The pullet is is breathing with her beak open now, more than she was this morning. She is eating and seems to be curious and alert. She isnt staring off into space or hunching up. Im worried this could be the start of something worse. Im wondering though if the stress of the ride home could have gotten her sick? If so, any ideas what it might be?

Symptoms so far include:

Sneezing
Coughing
Runny Nose
Open Beak Breathing

She is so far not:

Lethargic
Hunched
Bubbled
Gurgled
Wheezing
Rattling
Foaming
Stinky

Hi,
to me it sounds like worms. When my Animals got infected with worms I got the exact same symptoms. Is the runny nose liquid like a yellowy green?

The mucus from the nose is clear. She isnt coughing today, but she is eating like a horse. her brood mate is now sneezing, but is eating fine. Im wondering if its the dust in the coop? I have a little DE in the shavings, about 1 cup in a 9x12 area mixed with 3 inches of shavings. They arent acting sick, only a slight cough yesterday and runny nose. When I got Frightful and Crackers, they both had a runny nose for a few days, but are fine now. I put ACV in the new girls water and some vitamins. Hopefully thats what is making the cough go away since there wasnt any coughing this morning.

I dont think its gape since she isnt acting like a hen with gape. Ive seen it before, but I did take that into consideration. I'll do a worming and see if that helps.

Ah right thats good then, If it would have been a yellow/green with a vulgar smell then Im sure it would have been worms, I reckon its just a cold then. Worm them in case though, Better to be safe then sorry + its good to have your chickens wormed regularly for future reference.

Well the runny nose has stopped, but she still sneezes and once in a very rare while a bubble will form. She is still having trouble swallowing. I used the q-tip method to check for gape because I havent ruled that out, but it came out clean. I think its nasal though because when she breaths through her nose, her throat and the area of thin skin behind her nostrils bulges and shrinks heavily.

Here is a picture down her throat.

Its the best I could do my son took the picture. She is around 14 weeks. She is alert, still eating, if not a little difficulty, she is strong, she really resisted my attentions. She clucks, but its hoarse sounding.

Not sure whats wrong with her, her brood mate isnt sick and seems perfectly normal.
