I have a pair of mystery chicks from our last broodys, I could ID most of their chicks but there were three black ones ,one was all black and definitely looks like a cemani at the time the hen was in with a cemani "pullet " that had turned out to be a cockeral ,but this chick is a few weeks older ,I am wondering if the cockeral could have feasibly mated when it was so young that we were still assuming it was a pullet .At the time the eggs went under the broody that hatched the chick ,we had no black hens eggs under her and we dont have any other black cockerals .We have a sheltand tappit cockeral ,an Marsbar olive egger and a very young leghorn bantam .The last photo is of the cemani rooster

Do you have photos of the possible mothers and fathers? (Other than the Cemani--I see him.)

If the Cemani was the father, I would expect a dark comb on the chick.

What color is the mom?
She doesn't look very cemani-ish.
I dont know ,its from a broody ,so she was sat on eggs from the hens with her , the mother was either ,a lavender auracuana or a silver spangled hamburg or possibly a welsummer .We have one thats definitely a cemani it was completely black skin comb etc but theres two black feathered and black legged chicks but as far as I can tell they are not black skinned .This is one potential mum ,the other auracuana is the same ,the other hamburg is one of 4 potential hamburg mums ,A lot of our hens were broody or had chicks so there werent many hens who the eggs could have been from .At the time the only other cockerals were the two adults and a young cockeral about the same age or younger than the cemani

the mother was either ,a lavender auracuana

That's probably the mother, and the source of the black color.
When you cross a lavender to anything else, you often get black chicks.

I'm not sure which rooster is more likely to be the father, and I can't think of any easy way to tell.

Oh I didnt know that, thank you , ,we got a lavender chick from her so I just assumed all her chicks would be lavender ,so I guess she only had the lavender chick because the father was also a lavender auracuana ?It explains where all the black chicks are coming from , is it possible to know if it will lay tinted eggs

I am quite pleased the cemani isnt the father ,we rehomed him he was chasing and pecking chicks and ,he would go out of his way to peck them it wasnt just when they crossed his path

Yes, two lavender Ameraucana parents will produce lavender chicks. But lavender Ameraucana crossed with other chickens often produces black.

Yes, pullets will probably lay tinted (blue or green) eggs if at least one parent is an Ameraucana.
