Well he is a big calm rooster he will eat out of my hands he was the neighbors chicken but we saved him from a dog and he gave him to us we let his wounds on his back heal up now there scabs we through in a brown leghorn hen that lays everyday even in the winter she didn't lay yesterday though anyhow. We put her in there the day after that he mated with her he tried to the first day i was wondering could i breed him i like him but im wondering if he is to old he has like 1 and a half inch spurs the neighbor has no idea how old he is do you think i could still breed him?

You can still breed him. The only thing that could go wrong is no fertile eggs. Breed them, and then before you try and hatch any eggs crack a few open and check if it's fertile.I don't know about the spur/age thing.

Yes, he can be fertile. Let them stay together for a week or so---then crack the eggs and see if you have a 'bulls-eye.. He will need more than one girl--IF not, he will over breed her, tear her back up and hurt her.. I would add several more!

No real way to age a chicken that I know of.. Maybe someone else can help..

You can`t tell the age of a rooster by the length of his spurs. I`ve had 3 inch spurs on 2 yo roosters. Seems to have more to do with being penned on dirt than age. Anyway, hard to tell age. A young rooster will have smooth legs up to a point, but variables are many. If your cock is breeding the hens, he is probably fertile. Good job......Pop
