I remember reading on here the differences between male and female feathering in RIR chicks. Whoever posted that said that even at a young age you can tell which is which because of their feathering, length of wing feathers and tails, etc. I have 2 RIR chicks and they seem to be the opposite of what the farm store people said they were. The one that is supposed to be a male has way more feathering than the other one that was supposed to be a female.

Thx

I remember reading a post like that and I believe it was......the female will have a longer faster tail feather development than a roo....also the back feathers will fill in quicker, whereas the roo would have hardly any tail feathers at all.
I have also heard it said that the roos tail feather will be pointed up and the hens would be on less of an angle coming off the back feathers......
Either way....I still think the best bet is wait for the crow

Good luck!

This probably won't help you, but I got two RIR's - one feathered out much more quickly than the other, longer tail and wing feathers, etc., and we began to assume that the other was a roo. However, they are 11 weeks old now and are both obviously hens. So...when they hit 8-10 weeks, you'll likely know for sure. It's so hard to be patient!
